The Surrendered, Chang-Rae Lee
This was, hands down and without question, the best book I read in 2011. Scratch that, it was one of the best books that I’ve ever read.
It’s a long, dark, and very heavy story about war and survival. Some of the storytelling was so graphic I actually had to avert my eyes from the words, much like I do when watching a violent scene in a movie. It’s not for the faint of heart.
I read the book months ago and have not been able to stop thinking about it. It stuck with me. I often find myself asking people if they’ve read it, recommending it, and waiting patiently so I can discuss it once people have finished it.
